THE ARCHDIOCESAN SEXUAL ABUSE, MISCONDUCT, AND HARASSMENT REVIEW BOARD
The Archdiocesan Sexual Abuse, Misconduct, and Harassment Committee is an independent advisory body appointed by the Metropolitan and established in accordance with the Charter for the Protection of Children, Young People, and Other Vulnerable Persons of the Italo-Greek Byzantine Orthodox Catholic Church. Functions of the Review Board include reviewing archdiocesan policies for responding to accusations, complaints, and allegations of sexual abuse, misconduct, and harassment of children, young people, and other vulnerable persons, and advising the Metropolitan in his determination of suitability for the continued ministry of the accused. In this regard, the Board performs three important roles:
- Review and make recommendations concerning changes to existing policies or the
adoption of new sexual misconduct policies, especially the Charter for the Protection of Children, Young People, and Other Vulnerable Persons of the Italo-Greek Byzantine Orthodox Catholic Church. - Review and make recommendations regarding the continuation in the ministry of clergy who
have allegedly sexually abused or exploited minors. - Review and make recommendations regarding the return to the ministry of priests and
deacons following their removal from active ministry when allegations are found to be
unsubstantiated.
The Board has independent authority to hire or otherwise retain outside investigators to investigate any and all accusations, complaints, or allegations against archdiocesan staff, workers, employees, volunteers, and clergy. The Board also has the responsibility of notifying the appropriate law enforcement agencies of any allegations, accusations, or complaints as soon as they are received.
Membership
The Board is comprised of the following: one law enforcement officer, an attorney, a certified social worker, a certified trauma specialist, a psychologist, a nurse, and a certified victim's advocate. The Board answers only to the Metropolitan and advises the other Archdiocesan Departments (the General Council, the Metropolitan Council, the Presbyteral Council, etc. on an as-needed basis.
